Wade Trips
Experience the iconic San Juan River and the finest fly fishing New Mexico has to offer on a 4-8 hour wade trip with About Trout. These trips are a great way for anglers of all experience levels, families, corporate groups, and die-hard fly fishers alike to experience the uniqueness of the Juan. The San Juan River is a year-round fishery with ample opportunities for a trophy fish you'll never forget.
What's Included
From the time we meet at the river access until the time we shake hands goodbye, we have everything fishing taken care of! Our guides are expert San Juan River fly anglers, patient teachers, and incredibly accommodating hosts. All fly rods, reels, lines, tippets, and flies are taken care of. If you break off, grab another rod while we re-rig. The cooler is loaded with ice and waters with plenty of room for your lunch, snacks, and beverages of choice. On our wade trips, we'll fish several access points, with some spots that are only accessible by wading.
Target Species
Rainbow Trout
In the upper reaches, a mix of juvenile trout up to seven inches are stocked, while the middle river receives catchable-sized rainbow trout, exclusively triploid females. This means that any male rainbow trout caught was naturally born in the river, as they don't typically reproduce successfully here.
Brown Trout
The San Juan River is a trophy fishery with absolutely massive brown trout. The population is 100% wild and self-sustaining, growing significantly over the last decade. They feed on juvenile rainbow trout stocked by the state, producing some freakishly large browns.
An Accessible Fishery
The San Juan River has dozens of wade fishing access points with a designated wade-only section between Texas Hole and the Navajo Dam. Depending on the flows, we'll be able to hit several spots during a day. This is a great way to hone in on certain types of fishing like streamers and Euro Nymphing. If you want to really take the Euro Nymphing game to the next level, we highly recommend our Euro Nymphing trips with Norm Maktima.
Gear We Use
We pride ourselves on using the highest quality tackle and gear. From our fly lines to the drift boats, all of our equipment is meticulously maintained. We know anglers may want to bring their own gear, but if you want to travel a little lighter, you'll be fighting Saun Juan River trout on professional equipment all day.
What To Bring
You will need waders and wading boots for this trip. If you do not have your own, we can get you a rental pair for an additional fee. We have all of your tackle and fishing equipment covered, but all anglers are welcome to bring their own gear. Come prepared for the weather during your season. Your guide will be in touch with you leading up to your trip to confirm you're fully prepared for your fly fishing float trip. We have a thorough fly fishing packing list with more information, and do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. All guests 12 years and older require a New Mexico fishing license.
