Euro Nymphing Trips
Join San Juan River legend and Euro Nymphing guru, Norm Maktima, for a wade trip targeting trophy-sized trout on small nymphs and light tackle. From the quality water through the bait or "quantity water", euro nymphing is a great way to fish the river all year round. On these trips, we'll hit several spots and you'll learn everything you need to know about this unique approach to fly fishing.
What's Included
From the time we meet at the access until the time we shake hands goodbye, we have everything fishing taken care of! Norm is an expert San Juan River fly angler, a patient teacher, and an incredibly accommodating host. All fly rods, reels, lines, tippets, and flies are taken care of. If you break off, grab another rod while we re-rig. The cooler is loaded with ice and waters with plenty of room for your lunch, snacks, and beverages of choice.
Target Species
Rainbow Trout
In the upper reaches, a mix of juvenile trout up to seven inches are stocked, while the middle river receives catchable-sized rainbow trout, exclusively triploid females. This means that any male rainbow trout caught was naturally born in the river, as they don't typically reproduce successfully here.
Brown Trout
The San Juan River is a trophy fishery with absolutely massive brown trout. The population is 100% wild and self-sustaining, growing significantly over the last decade. They feed on juvenile rainbow trout stocked by the state, producing some freakishly large browns.
Year Round Fishing
When folks ask us, "When is the best time to fish the San Juan River?" We simply reply, yes. The Juan is a year-round fishery, with trophy opportunities lingering around almost every bend regardless of the season. While the San Juan is very wadeable, flows can fluctuate throughout the year when they call for water for irrigation. Wading flows are generally 300-1000cfs. Your guide will always ensure that your euro nymphing trip is safe.
Gear We Use
We like 10.5' and 11' 3wts, Euro set-ups in 2wt to 4wt will work as well. The longer euro rods make it easier to reach out and access water you may not be able to safely wade. We lean more toward the 3wt and 4wts as they have the backbone to turn over some of the Juan's larger trout, especially in heavier flows. Remember, Euro rods are not a 1v1 to your standard fly rod, and a Euro 3wt is more similar to a 5wt in terms of fish-fighting ability.
What To Bring
We have all of your tackle and fishing equipment covered, but all anglers are welcome to bring their own gear. Come prepared for the weather during your season. Your guide will be in touch with you leading up to your trip to confirm you're fully prepared for your fly fishing float trip. We have a thorough fly fishing packing list with more information, and do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. All guests 12 years and older require a New Mexico fishing license.
