San Juan River Streamer Day

The San Juan River has a long history — and a strong myth. For decades, anglers have come here believing success meant 6x tippet and size 24 midges, drifting tiny bugs through slow, glassy seams. That’s the story everyone’s heard. But it’s not the only one worth telling.

This week I had the chance to spend a few days on the river with Ethan Beasley, an incredible photographer and storyteller, and Niko Ebert, a talented low-water guide out of Arizona. We fished hard, laughed harder, and put a few beautiful fish in the net — but more than that, we share the idea that the San Juan is capable of so much more than most people think.

Ethan captured it beautifully through the lens — the long casts, the slow tension of a swing, the violent take that makes your heart stop for a second. And watching Niko adapt his Arizona low-water instincts to this system was a reminder that great anglers are always learning, always evolving.

Streamer and two-hand fishing on the San Juan isn’t a niche — it’s a movement. It’s how we reconnect to the river, to the fish, and to the act of fishing itself.
