San Juan River Fishing Report — June 2026

The San Juan River is currently flowing at 800 CFS, and fishing has been excellent.

A flow change is scheduled for June 10, but at this point, all of us are still guessing about what that change will look like. As always, dam-release schedules can change, and we will continue operating with the best information available.

A couple of days ago, the release was switched to a different gate at Navajo Dam, and the river is actively clearing. That change has already had a noticeable effect on the fishing.

The Fish Are Looking Up Again

Dry-fly fishing has improved significantly, and we are now seeing rising fish throughout the river. Trout have been coming up to eat midges and Baetis, and we are excited to see the San Juan finally starting to clear.

This is also the beginning of one of our favorite times of year. As summer progresses, we will start looking for opportunities to throw larger dry flies like Chubby Chernobyls, Fat Alberts, and all the other big foam monstrosities San Juan trout sometimes decide to eat later in the day.

Streamer Fishing

Streamer fishing has been excellent throughout the river.

We have been throwing everything from larger single streamers to tandem rigs. Productive patterns and colors have included:

  • Sparkle Minnows
  • Sculpzillas
  • Daddy’s Money
  • White
  • Black
  • Olive

With 800 CFS moving through the river, there is plenty of good streamer water available from top to bottom.

Nymphing

As the water continues to clear and bug activity increases, the traditional San Juan River staples are coming back into play.

Productive flies currently include:

  • Chocolate Foam Wings
  • Scintillas
  • RS2s
  • Fluff Baetis
  • Midge and Baetis patterns

The improving visibility and increased insect activity are giving anglers more options throughout the day.

Wade Trips, Float Trips, and Super Full Days

Although we do not know exactly what will happen after the scheduled June 10 flow change, 800 CFS remains an excellent fishing flow.

We have been running everything from wade trips and full-day floats to Super Full Days for anglers who want to stay on the water later and take advantage of the changing evening conditions.

More than anything, it is just great to see the fish looking up again. The river is clearing, the bugs are becoming more active, and summer fishing on the San Juan is beginning to take shape.

Why Fishing Guides Love Bibs

With all the late-season rain we’ve been getting on the San Juan, I wanted to talk about one of my favorite pieces of guide gear: bibs. The bib revolution has happened. Bass anglers seem like they were ahead of the curve on this one, but more and more Western fly-fishing guides are figuring out just how…

San Juan River Update — September 23, 2026 250CFS

(Guide Brian Cronin and Anne found a big one in the weed beds) As of September 22, the San Juan is running at 250 CFS. That’s low water, but there’s no reason to panic. We’ve finally been getting some much-needed rain, and with the Animas running high from all that moisture, releases from Navajo Reservoir have…
