Guide Flies: The Milk Man

One of the questions most asked when guiding is, “what are we using?”. Every guide has their confidence flies, I hope to share mine with you throughout the year with this “guide flies” series. Currently around the Rockies, rivers are coming down after snowmelt has caused the annual runoff. For this time year I turn to the milk man.

Originally tied by Fulling Mill’s Eric Kelley, this fly has quickly become a top producer in my ever evolving fly rotation. The milk man is a great attractor seemingly looking like nothing and everything all at once. The white bead really makes it pop in stained water, and shows the fish something different in clear water/ pressured conditions.

Eric originally tied his milk man on a tiemco 2499-SP, a short shank wide gap hook. I like mine tied on Fulling Mill’s jig force hook, typically in a #14 with a 2.8mm slotted tungsten bead. Give the milk man a shot in stained or clear water. I know it will become an instant favorite for you.

San Juan River Streamer Day

The San Juan River has a long history — and a strong myth. For decades, anglers have come here believing success meant 6x tippet and size 24 midges, drifting tiny bugs through slow, glassy seams. That’s the story everyone’s heard. But it’s not the only one worth telling. This week I had the chance to spend…

November on the San Juan

Welcome To Guide Season We always call it “guide season” — not because we’re less busy, but because it’s the kind of fishing that reminds us why we do this in the first place. Long drifts, willing trout, and the kind of quiet that is very much welcome after our October peak season.  It’s All…

Matching the Line to the Mission: A Guide’s Take on Streamer Setups

Most anglers obsess over flies. We debate shades of olive, count rubber legs, and argue about whether the head of a Rusty Trombone should be gold or copper. But the truth is, the most important piece of your streamer setup isn’t dangling off the end of your tippet — it’s the fly line. When you’re…
