August 2025 San Juan River Fly Fishing Report
Flows: ~800 CFS below Navajo Dam
Water Clarity: Clear
Vibes: High
August Means Prime Time on the San Juan River
If you’ve been waiting for the perfect window to fish the legendary San Juan River, August 2025 is delivering in a big way. Flows have dropped to around 800 cubic feet per second, creating ideal conditions for both wading and floating. With crystal-clear water and healthy bug activity, trout are feeding aggressively — and anglers are seeing some of the best dry fly and streamer action of the season.
Why the Fishing is So Good Right Now
- Steady Flows: The tailwater below Navajo Dam provides cold, oxygen-rich water that keeps trout active even during summer heat.
- Bug Activity: Baetis and midges are hatching daily, while terrestrials like ants and beetles are producing great surface takes. The recent flow changes have also dislodged a ton of scuds from the weeds and the trout have taken notice.
Recommended Flies for August

- Nymphs: Red Larva, Gray Scuds, Foam Wings, Pheasant Tails
- Dry Flies: Fat Alberts, Small Chubby Chernobyls, Ant Patterns, Trico Spinners
- Streamers: Small articulated patterns, Woolly Buggers, Trout imitations
Best Tactics
- Early & Late: Fish mornings and evenings to avoid midday sun and capitalize on low-light feeding.
- Sight Fishing: With flows at 800 CFS, wading anglers can stalk fish in side channels and riffles.
- Float Trips: Cover more water and target aggressive fish with streamers along banks and mid river shelves.
August on the San Juan River is delivering some of the best fishing conditions we’ve seen all year. Flows have dropped to around 800 cubic feet per second below Navajo Dam, creating a perfect balance for both wading and floating. The cold, clear tailwater keeps trout active even in the heat of summer, and with steady flows and strong bug activity, fish are feeding throughout the day. Daily hatches keep the surface lively. Terrestrial patterns like ants, beetles, and small chubby chernobyls are producing explosive takes. Beneath the surface, patterns such as red larva, gray scuds, foam wings, and pheasant tails continue to bring fish to the net, while articulated streamers, woolly buggers, and trout imitations are turning the heads of larger, more aggressive trout.
Early mornings and late evenings remain the most productive windows, offering cooler air temperatures, softer light, and increased trout activity. At current flows, sight fishing in side channels and riffles is highly effective, and anglers choosing to float can cover water efficiently, targeting cutbanks and deep runs with streamers. Both rainbow and brown trout are feeding heavily in preparation for the seasonal change, giving anglers an excellent chance at trophy-sized fish. August offers some of the most diverse opportunities on the San Juan, from technical dry fly presentations to aggressive streamer action, making it an ideal month for both seasoned anglers and those new to the sport.
